Not many projects give you nightmares. Sure, the odd work related anxiety dream about checking the gate back when I shot on film - but the research on this one on this one had me waking on a cold sweat on the meer week I made it…one of the darkest, most esoteric videos I think I’ve made outside of actual horror films. Suffice to say the client loved it!

If you already saw the write up on Whisper in the Dark, this was a project that I did during the a phase when much of my motion design and animation work was either internal for some known brands or plain behind NDAs, so I needed some more pieces to show off my animation work, and years doing a side gig as a music video director gave me a client base for motion and animation work to build up more of a portfolio.

Very Door-esque lyrically, the video is full horror film references including Hellraiser, Evil Dead, Cthulhu and even features a monster my eldest came up with (despite still not being allow to watch this video). The video needed to feel like the void, or something coming through from the other side. Going for a look that looked like engravings gives it a style I hadn’t seen a lot of in animation and getting this right too a bit of visual development. My art skills were still being honed when this was made but I feel like it still has a lot going for it, I made a lot of custom brushes for it that I still use to this day (maybe not so much the skull brush).
